(1) Data Mining – business model of the future?!

The webfactVentures Team was attending Facebooks „Developer Garage“ in Hamburg last Wednesday. We were very impressed by the keynote of angel investor & entrepreneur Salim Ismail. Salim was the head of Yahoo’s Incubator Brickhouse. In his one hour speech which was held in 20 minutes (!!!) Salim went through the history of the web. He pointed out that today there are basically only three different business models which work on social sites: Advertising; Subscriptions AND Data Mining. Salim is convinced that the future belongs to Data Mining. This is something webfactVentures really agrees with. Two of our current projects rely on collecting user data as a business model.

(3) What is a “critical mass”

Blogger Andrew Chen made some deeper thoughts and assumptions about one of the most imprecise terms of our business: “The Critical Mass”. As a term used in nearly any start-up business plan it is still very hard to seize. A critical mass is often described as a point in time where suddenly magic kicks in and a user based site is running on its own. It can also be considered as a point in time where the viral effect gets stronger than advertising and the site gets lots of users coming in but what people usually mean is that a site is not that useful until there’s a certain amount of people on it.

Andrew encourages anyone building a social site to really consider what type of network they are building for, and how many people they need at the local level. The next step then must be to aggregate these smaller groups into a larger one. This is basically what Facebook did when starting as a college network. We really appreciate the substance Andrew gave to the term critical mass with his article. Thank You Andrew.

This tool will allow other users to sign up to websites, advertise and enable different OpenSocial programs. Ultimatly, using this tool, users will be able to take with them their personal profile from one social networking site, to another.

(5) The thin line between Unsocial Networks and Social Spam

It has been said that the Internet’s leading social networks have everything a user needs in order to conduct social activities online. However, all social networks, Facebook and Myspace included, lack the capabilities to integrate emails capabilities from within the social network, making the site that much more social.

In other words, engineers are trying to create something that half way between a social network and an email account, and has the capabilities of both. Social Network representatives are now studying and analyzing the impact of such integration, in terms of protection and security. Introducing such capabilities will surely have a great impact on the social networking scene.

(6) Facebook vs. Google Part I

MySpace, then Facebook and then Google all recently launched services for third parties to access their users’ data through other sites. Google, though, uses Facebook’s developer platform to distribute Facebook user data through its own service, Google Friend Connect. Now, Facebook has cut off that access.

Heres what Facebook says: “Now that Google has launched Friend Connect, we’ve had a chance to evaluate the technology. We’ve found that it redistributes user information from Facebook to other developers without users’ knowledge, which doesn’t respect the privacy standards our users have come to expect and is a violation of our Terms of Service.”

PROTOTYPE BY WEBFACT

webfact | 26 Mai, 2008 15:35

Stern.de is one of the most successfull online portals in Germany. One of the most important new extensions in the past has been a stand-alone short-list application that is available at http://shortlist.stern.de.

webfact contributed to the major success of this completly new way to present entertainment-contents by stern.  In a pilot project with Bertelsmann’s company Arvato, webfact was responsible for the development of the first prototype for the core-module of the shortlist application - the interactive theme-overview in flash that is now integrated right on the homepage of http://shortlist.stern.de/. webfact developed the flash-clickdummy and an algorithm to generate the main-picture of the theme out of different small images.

Based on this development, Gruner and Jahr developed the whole portal. Stern shortlist today offers users the service to create, view and publish individual lists with favourite contents from entertainment. The core module on the homepage is a flash-application that uses big pictures to present new themes on the shortlist-portal.
