CDs, die es nicht an jeder Ecke gibt - Masaaki Suzuki

digitalindie | 31 Juli, 2008 11:17

The Japanese organist, harpsichordist and conductor, Masaaki Suzuki, began to play the organ at the age of 12 for church services every Sunday. After graduating from Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music with a degree in composition and organ performance, he continued to study the harpsichord and organ at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam under Ton Koopman and Piet Kee. Having achieved Soloist Diplomas in both of his instruments in Amsterdam, he was awarded second prize in the Harpsichord Competition (Basso continuo) in 1980 and third Prize in the Organ Competition in 1982 in the Flanders Festival at Bruges, Belgium.

From 1981 to 1983 Masaaki Suzuki was a harpsichord instructor at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Duisburg, Germany. Since his return to Japan, he has not only given many concerts as organist and harpsichordist all over the country, but has organized an acclaimed concert series at the chapel of Shoin Women¹s University in Kobe, where a French classical organ built by Marc Garnier is installed.

Meanwhile Masaaki Suzuki has acquired an outstanding reputation not only as an organ and harpsichord soloist, but also as a conductor. Since 1990 Suzuki has been the musical director of the Bach Collegium Japan; as such, he works regularly with renowned European soloists and ensembles. Suzuki has won an enviable reputation for his interpretation of Bach’s cantatas on BIS. In addition, Suzuki is recording J.S. Bach’s complete harpsichord music for BIS.

CDs, die es nicht an jeder Ecke gibt - Venice Baroque Orchestra

digitalindie | 30 Juli, 2008 11:15

Bringing fresh energy to the rich legacy of Baroque music that endures in Venice, the Venice Baroque Orchestra (= VBO) – the resident orchestra of the city’s Scuola Grande di San Rocco, one of Venice’s most venerable and respected cultural institutions - has become an important new force in the field of period-instruments performance. The VBO focuses on Italian music of the 17th and 18th centuries, and the ongoing rediscovery of Italian Baroque opera.

The founding of the VBO – the only Venetian orchestra specializing in the performance of early music with original instruments – grew out of a 1997 encounter between
Andrea Marcon and the Accademia di San Rocco. The connection has an important link with Venetian tradition – the Scuola is home to the paintings of Tintoretto, with a history that echoes with the music of Giovanni Gabrieli, Giovanni Battista Grillo, Giovanni Picchi and Francesco Cavalli.

In the spirit of a true Baroque orchestra, the size and composition of the VBO varies, reflecting the demands of the repertoire, from a small chamber ensemble to the classic orchestra. The orchestra has already collaborated with a number of renowned soloists and presented the first modern performances of a number of forgotten Baroque works. At the Teatro Fenice in 1998, the orchestra gave the first modern performance of Francesco Cavalli’s opera L’Orione, revised and transcribed by
Andrea Marcon.

digitalindie | 24 Juli, 2008 11:14

The orchestra has had a long tradition of playing contemporary music. Ludwig Van Beethoven's second symphony was performed in Bergen in the year it was published, 1804 - even before it was performed in Berlin. Bergen-born composer Edvard Grieg had close ties with the orchestra, and was artistic director from 1880 to 1882. He also bequeathed a portion of his estate to a fund which continues to provide financial support for the orchestra. Other composers have served as principal conductor of the orchestra, including Arvid Fladmoe, Johan Halvorsen, Iver Holter, Richard Henneberg, Olav Kielland and Per Winge. Composer Harald Sæverud was frequently invited to conduct his own works, and the orchestra continues to commission and perform new compositions on a regular basis. Other composers who have conducted their own works with the orchestra include Aaron Copland, Karl Nielsen, Jean Sibelius, Witold Lutosławski, Lukas Foss, and Krzysztof Penderecki. In 1953 the Festspillene i Bergen was started and Leopold Stokowski was contracted to conduct the orchestra. Other conductors at the Bergen Festival have included Eugene Ormandy and Sir Thomas Beecham.

American conductor Andrew Litton became principal conductor in 2003 and artistic director in 2005. In 2002 the orchestra began, as the first Norwegian orchestra ever, recording the complete orchestral works of Edvard Grieg, its former music director. Norwegian conductor Ole Kristian Ruud and the orchestra recorded the final of the 7 CDs for BIS., in 2005. Also in 2005, Andrew Litton and the orchestra recorded music from Prokofiev's ballet Romeo and Juliet for BIS. This was Litton's first recording with the orchestra.

Many members of the orchestra teach at the Grieg Academy of Music, which is a music conservatory within the University of Bergen.

CDs, die esnicht an jeder Ecke gibt ! Ensemble Explorations

digitalindie | 17 Juli, 2008 11:46

Ensemble Explorations

Since 1995 Roel Dieltiens, who is also a notable interpreter of chamber music, has appeared with such partners as Frank Braley (piano), Christine Busch, Margarete Adorf (violin) and Richard Wolfe and Frans Vos (viola) ‘for the pleasure of playing together’: thus the Ensemble Explorations was born. Along with the choreographer Alain Platel and Les "Ballets C. de la B." he created Iets op Bach, which won the ‘Time Out Live Award’ in London in 1998 and the ‘Masque d’Or’ in Montreal in 1999. In Alain Platel’s new and more intimate production entitled Rien de Rien, Roel Dieltiens appears onstage playing repertoire by Gubaidulina, Ligeti, Van Hove, Moser, Crumb and Kodály. This production toured France and Germany early in 2002.
Ensemble Explorations has an approach to music that is both innovative and original. Many of its recordings have received special awards (Prix Caecilia, Diapason d’Or). The Ensemble Explorations regularly invites musicians from varied backgrounds to perform repertoire ranging from Beethoven, Dvořák, Janáček, Boccherini and Schubert to Reich, Van Hove and A. Weber.

CDs, die esnicht an jeder Ecke gibt ! Ensemble Clément Janequin

digitalindie | 17 Juli, 2008 11:36

In the late '70s and early '80s, as the music world was being reshaped by the emergence of the great English a cappella ensembles (Gothic Voices, the Tallis Scholars, the Hilliard Ensemble), a virtuoso countertenor from France launched a sonic revolution of his own. The singer, Dominique Visse, founded the Ensemble Clément Janequin in 1978, and over the twenty years of the group's career it has virtually come to own the performance of Renaissance French music. The ensemble's characteristic panache and vigor has produced authoritative interpretations, especially for the sixteenth century chanson repertory. Among the ensemble's many recordings, more than ten collections of French vernacular music have taken center stage. These have included music of the group's namesake, Clément Janequin and his contemporary Claudin de Sermisy, as well as Anthoine de Bertrand, Costeley, Roland de Lassus, and Claude le Jeune.
